Wed Oct-20 @ noon [Public Livestream Link] Alison Killing Investigating Xinjiang’s Network of Detention Camps Rensselaer School of Architecture continues its Fall 2021 Lecture Series this Thursday September 30th at 6:30pm with the online lecture “Investigating Xinjiang’s Network of Detention Camps” by Alison Killing presents (Rotterdam) based firm Killing Architects. Alison Killing is a journalist and licensed architect who uses maps and data to investigate urgent social issues. In 2021 she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting, together with Megha Rajagopalan and Christo Buschek, for a series of articles exposing the network of detention camps in Xinjiang, China. It is believed that more than a million people have been detained in the north west region of Xinjiang, as part of China’s campaign of oppression against Turkic Muslims. Alison Killing presents her team’s use of satellite imagery, architectural analysis and eyewitness interviews to uncover the camp network and investigate what was happening there. Alison Killing and her team use their “architecture and urban planning skills to investigate urgent social issues, from surveillance in cities, to migration to uncovering secret networks of prison camps.
