Matt Burgermaster recognized among 2026 ACSA Architectural Education Award Winners

RPI School of Architecture Professor Matt Burgermaster and his office MABU received Honorable Mention recognition for the 2026 ACSA Faculty Design Award from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) for the project “Twenty Ways Home”. This award is part of ACSA’s annual Architectural Education Awards program which honors architectural educators who “advance the discipline’s knowledge base and extend their work beyond the borders of academia into practice and the public sector”. This is the third time Professor Burgermaster’s work has been recognized with this honor. RPI SoA alum Ziyuan (Sam) Wu, Class of 2023, was a key member of the MABU team for this project. “Twenty Ways Home” is an adaptive reuse project that reimagines a historic church and grounds as a new multi-building complex for a community-based social services organization in Albany, N.Y. The design strategically integrates a series of discreet building alterations and additions with a comprehensive landscape design to create a new commons. It features small, subtractive interventions into two existing structures to open up their interiors to the former churchyard, which is reimagined as a garden of forking paths and varied topography set within a semi-enclosed cloister. In 2024, the American Institute of Architects recognized this project with the 2024 Tri-State Design Award for regional design excellence across the states of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. This project was initiated in an academic context as a multi-year design research studio at the RPI School of Architecture in 2023. RPI student Nora Wright, Class of 2024, contributed to its preliminary development through an undergraduate research project (URP).
