A Non-Variational Quantum Approach to Solving Combinatorial Optimization Problems: Iterative-QAOA

Date: Tuesday, March 17, 2026 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM - Quantum computers introduce new opportunities for modeling and solving decision problems. In this talk, we will first discuss the unique positioning of Industrial Engineering in the quantum research landscape that motivates new directions at the intersection of application and theory. Then as an example, we will present a new algorithm, Iterative-QAOA, for combinational optimization problems.

Scientists Create a New State of Matter at Room Temperature Using Light and Nanostructures

Engineering professor Wei Bao and colleagues have created a new and unusual state of matter — known as a supersolid — by engineering how light and matter interact inside a nanoscale device. The work, published in Nature Nanotechnology, demonstrates that this exotic quantum phase can exist at room temperature, overcoming a long-standing limitation in the field.
