Wednesday, October 8, 2025 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM – After receiving his PhD in philosophy from the CUNY, Thomas Ferguson spent several years in industry on the Cyc artificial intelligence project before joining the data firm Dun & Bradstreet as principal ontologist. After postdocs at the Inst. for Logic, Language & Computation at the University of Amsterdam, the University of St. Andrews, and the Institutes of Philosophy and Computer Science at the Czech Academy of Science, he arrived at RPI.

Date: Wednesday, October 8, 2025 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM - “Latent Type Heterogeneity in Dynamic Empirical Models”. This talk introduces the semiparametric type fixed effects (TFE) linear panel model that allows for heterogeneous coefficients and time-varying patterns of heterogeneity, driven by a latent, time-invariant continuous random variable referred to as a "type". Abbott Lecture Series hosted each fall in the Chemical Engineering Department honors Abbott’s legacy and celebrates his achievements. This year's speaker is Dr. Randall Snurr, Professor from Northwestern University. Dr. Snurr's seminar titled “Abbott Lecture: Adsorption Hysteresis and Effects of Framework Flexibility in Nanoporous Materials: Thermodynamics and Applications” is opened to all.
